Pumpkin the guinea pig

I just wanted to let everyone know that Pumpkin passed away this weekend. She has been a part of my class since I became a lead teacher five years ago. She had an impact on a lot of children and families. She was a very big part of our class over the years. A few weeks after school started I could tell that she has not doing good so that’s why I stopped bringing her to class. I have talked with the children about her staying at home because she didn’t feel good and that Mikayla’s pig would start visiting us. Her name is Leona.  I won’t come out and talk about Pumpkin unless it is brought up. I just want to warn you in case it comes up we will talk about it and then talk about what a great pig she was.

Class Parties
We are having our class parties on Thursday October 31st and Friday November 1st. There will be sign-up sheets out for party treats. The children are invited to wear costumes if they want and we will parade around the school before the party. The morning parties will be at 10:30 and the afternoon party will begin around 2:00!

We will be highlighting the importance of dramatic play and different aspects of early literacy. Come in your Halloween costume and enjoy some of the teacher’s favorite stores, then stay for our Costume contest. There are 5 different categories this year and the winner from each will receive $10 off of next month’s tuition. The categories are: cutest, best homemade, most creative, best family themed, and spookiest.

Just a note
We will be starting the Word Wall this week! I encourage you to help your child find items that begin with the letter of the week. Please don’t send other toys from home as we don’t want them to get broke or mixed in with ours. Word Wall items will only be brought out and shared during Word Wall and then placed in your child cubby.

Pictures
We will have our class and individual pictures on Wednesday and Thursday in the morning and Wednesday afternoon.

Laps for LAPS
We will be hosting a fundraising event on September 27th called Laps for LAPS! This is the first year that we are hosting this event but basically you sponsor and you ask grandparents, etc. to sponsor your child for each lap your child completes (which is a made up course in our parking lot).

Carnival
Our Fall Carnival is also fast approaching! It will be held on October 4th this year and we will need your help! This is a great opportunity to get some of your volunteer hours that are required in. We need help set up and clean up as well as manning our booth, which happens to be the ever popular Bounce House! There is a signup sheet out for this by our sign in sheet and also on Maria’s door.

Word Wall
The letter of the week will be Ll. The children love to bring items into share and this is a great way to have them start to think about beginning letter sounds so we encourage you to help your children find something they can bring in that starts with the letter of the week. The items go in a container at the beginning of the day and then after they have been shared they will go home. 

This week in the Dragonfly Class
This week in the Dragonfly Class we will reading the book Chicka Chicka Boom Boom along with other letter books. We will be doing activities that all involve letters as we begin the word wall. On Monday and Tuesday we will be painting our Chicka Chicka Boom Boom Tree with our arms and hands so if you could please send your child in short sleeves it would be very much appreciated. 

Just a note

There are a couple of dates that I want to bring to your attention to that are coming up fast! We will be hosting a fundraising event on September 27th called Laps for LAPS! This is the first year that we are hosting this event but basically you sponsor and you ask grandparents, etc. to sponsor your child for each lap your child completes (which is a made up course in our parking lot). A flyer with more information will go home Monday and Tuesday.

Our Fall Carnival is also fast approaching! It will be held on October 4th this year and we will need your help! This is a great opportunity to get some of your volunteer hours that are required in. We need help set up and clean up as well as manning our booth, which happens to be the ever popular Bounce House! There is a signup sheet out for this.

Pictures
It’s not too late!! If we don’t have your pictures you can still send them in! 
We will be finishing up our projects with pictures this week We need a picture of your child alone, one of them doing something they enjoy and one of your family. Please send copies of these pictures as you will we keep them all year.

Snapfish Album
Our Classroom Album is created and ready for your viewing!! I have emailed you the link to the website and the unique classroom code. If you don’t have a Snapfish account then you will have to sign up for one and then join our password protected group room. This is a fun way for you to talk with your child about their day at school and you can have a snap shot of what their day looks like. 

Kindred Visit
We are visiting the grandma’s & grandpas at Kindred across the street Wednesday and Thursday this week for the first time this year. (Thursday for the Afternoon Class) This can be a little scary the first couple of times because it’s a new atmosphere and some of the residents are in wheel chairs and some are sleeping. I will prepare the children for this by talking about how we all have similarities and differences. If you could talk with your child with positive energy about this time we share there it would be very helpful. This can be a very rewarding and joyful time in sharing our smiles & songs and that’s what we want to focus on.

This week in the Dragonfly Class
This week in the Dragonfly Class we will finish up with our All About Me theme. We didn’t quite as much done last week as I thought we would so we will trace our bodies, share the what I like pages and our family pictures. We created a self-portrait last week that we will keep for our portfolios and this week we will work on one to send home. We still need to measure our height and weight so we can track how much we grow this year!

Just a note

We are so excited to get this year started and get to know all of you!! If you have any questions or concerns please don’t hesitate to talk with me, during the day might be a little crazy but I am always available via email Drhodeshz@msn.com or phone (360)910-0982.

Drop Off
Drop off can be a little overwhelming but try to make it quick and be confident about it! It is best after the first day to say goodbye at the door (for your child and others). If it is too crowded in the classroom it can make children anxious. I know the first days of school can be hard (on the parents more so than the children!) but have confidence that your child is in good hands and we will take good care of your child. . Let your child know you are excited for them through words and the energy that you send out to them. Be confident and they will feel it

Newsletters
I will email the weekly newsletters to the email that you provided and they will be posted on the Little Acorn Website at http://lapskdragonfly.blogspot.com/ . The website also has the monthly newsletter and snack menu for the month.

This week in the Dragonfly Class
This week in the Dragonfly Class we are going to meet new friends and get to know our classroom! Our day includes a circle time where we talk about the weather and day of the week, outside play, snack, story time, and then art & classroom exploration. We will play with play dough and explore our classroom, meet new friends, and play outside.
